The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an indian government sponsored public service program conducted by the ministry of Youth Affairs and sports of the Government of India. Popularly known as NSS, The scheme was launched in Gandhiji's centenary year, 1969. Aimed at developing students personality through community service, NSS is a voluntary association of young people, especially students.
Government Arts College Udhagamandalam, has been soul member in NSS over three decades.In the early years it had only one unit for which Azhagar Ramanujam, a professor of Tamil Language and Head of the department was the programme officer, and he was widely noted for social activities.For his social services , he has been awarded the INDIRA GANDHI NSS Programme Officer Award for the year 2009-2010. After his death in Dec 2012, the unit was handed over to Dr.Krishnamurthy, an assistant professor of Bontany, who also an eminent programme officer like Azhagar Ramanujam.
Dr.R.Krishnamurthy,M.Sc.,B.Ed.,M.Phil.,Ph.D., ,Assistant Professor & HOD in botany department , was given incharge of the unit I and appointed as the programme officer from the date 19-02-2013. This unit began its service with 100 volunteers and today number has increased to 550.
The NSS unit II was started in the year of 2015. Dr.Kannapiran, M.Com.,M.Phil.,Ph.D., ,Assistant Professor & HOD in commerce department , was given incharge of the unit and appointed as the programme officer. This unit began its service with 100 volunteers and today number has increased to 350.
The NSS unit III was started in the year 2016. Mrs.K.Praveenadevi, Assistant professor in English, was given incharge of the unit and appointed as the programme officer. This unit began its service with 50 volunteers and today number has increased to 150.

Every year various regular activities has been carried out by the volunteers_ Classroom cleaning, campus cleaning, Swattch Barat Programme by the government, WOW programme for students by ITC, awareness programmes on Nature Save, AIDS, Childlabour, Women hygene awareness, wortshop for female or girl volunteers "smart girls", Dengu fever awareness rallies and drug addiction, Womenand children laws, Polio Programme by government, Etc..., And a special Camp for 7 days at kolikarai, rural tribal village, Kotagiri , The Nilgiris.
College shall spare no effort to continue to spread and futher strengthen its academic ambience for all classes of students and teachers.
To mould students of the college into well-meaning citizens of the nation through a socially committed, intellectually inclined, culture driven and future oriented paradigm of learning.
Making education as a powerful medium and a tool to promote the social and economic development to backward communities.
